As an assignment for my CAP 105 class, we used a website of our choosing to tie together all our social media presences. I chose to use About Me. Above is a screenshot of what my page looks like. I chose to link my Facebook and Instagram because those are the social media sites I use the most. About Me has so many different options of social media sites you can link together such as your WordPress blog, Pinterest, Flickr, etc.
While looking through the site options, I noticed a lot of photography sites. I could see how using a site to tie together all my social medias together would be a great asset in my professional life. It even gave me an option to link people to my portfolio which I thought was pretty cool.
As an assignment for my CAP 105 class I learned how to use Hootsuite. Hootsuite is a website where you can schedule social media posts in advance and it can also analyze results for you. Before this assignment I had never heard of such a program and I found it fun, easy and very useful to work with. Our assignment was to twitter, but seeing as I am a photography major, I got the go ahead to use Instagram instead because I saw it as more fitting.
If you want to see the full posts, you can go to my Instagram here.
I read an article about the best times to post on Instagram. It said that generally, Wednesday posts received slightly more likes than other day’s posts and around 5 pm usually got the most likes. I used a few of those times to see if it would make a difference. Over all, I really enjoyed using Hoostuite for this assignment and plan to try and learn more about everything the website is capable of doing.
Update: I learned that even if you have scheduled your posts, you have to be available at the time to confirm it. I had my post scheduled for 10 am and did not realize this, so my actual post did not go live until noon when I did some research and figured it out. It also made me copy and paste my caption into Instagram . This is a strange feature because it then becomes basically just a timer reminding you to post, and if you’re not around at that time, it does not get published. I was very impressed with this site at first, but this feature makes me not as excited to use it.
As an assignment for my CAP 105 class, we were tasked to make a business card using InDesign. I have worked with other Adobe software before such as Illustrator and Photoshop, but not InDesign. I found that it was fairly similar to the other programs I have worked with.
I found it hard to come up with ideas for a business card. I wasn’t even sure what kind of information is usually put on professional business cards. I googled some examples to get a better idea. Below is the business card I created.
This business card is not as professional as I would like, I was more focused on learning the software. Later in life when I need a professional one, I would redo it with official information.
SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. People use it to bring more visits to a web page. For my CAP 105 class, I was assigned to come up with five words or phrases I thought people would search for when looking for my blog.
Heres what I came up with:
With this list I used Google Keyword Tool to see how frequently these terms were searched. The numbers listed above are the number of times per month (averaged from the last twelve months) that the term is searched. Below is a graph of the same findings of all the words combined.
These terms are all pretty broad. The next step of this assignment was to use Google Keyword Tool to find five alternative words that may work better for helping people get you my blog.
Heres what I found:
“Website Advertising”….. 10,560
“Cut 7” …………………….. 13,030
“Latest Technology” ……..21,800
“GVSU Allendale”………… 240
If I wanted to try and bring more traffic to my blog, I could incorporated some of theses alternative keywords. I could say that “I attended school at GVSU Allendale, but that there is also a campus in downtown GR”. Or “In my CAP 105 we are learning about the latest technology used in advertising.” “For this project, we learned how to use Final Cut 7.” “Because of today’s technological advances, website advertising now plays a huge part in advertising.” And finally, “Advertising and marketing are closely related.”
I found this project very interesting and can see how using software like this would be helpful in getting your website more views.
As an assignment for my CAP 105 class, we had to create an infograph showing a representation of creating and sharing content. I chose to compare the two social media outlets I use the most, Facebook and Instagram.
The statistics I found out about Facebook were pretty much what I was expecting. It seems that everyone is on Facebook now, even our grandparents. The Instagram statistics also seem to match what I see day to day on the site, a large amount of young people and a few older people.
As an assignment for my CAP 105 class, we had to edit a photo by removing an element and adding a filter. Before this assignment, I was already pretty familiar with the software. This assignment was a nice refresher because it was been awhile since I used Photoshop.
On the right is my before image, it was taken in GVSU’s Arboretum. As you can see, both have a few minor blemishes and her bra strap is showing. To begin I went in with the healing tool and removed the blemishes. Then I used the clone stamp to remove the
showing bra strap. Next I was curious what the image would look like if the blanket went all the way to the edge of the frame and removing the patch of leafs. Trying to edit such a large area can be a tricky process because you can often tell you have messed with it in the final image. This was especially hard because the blanket had a pattern I had to try and replicate. You can tell in my final image but I think only if you look for it since the focus is their faces and the blanket is the background. Finally, I decreased the saturation to give the image a softer feel since there are lots bright colors in the clothes and blanket. Below is the image after editing.
As an assignment for my CAP 105 class, I had to shoot and edit a video using Final Cut Pro. I love watching all the cooking videos that come up on Facebook and can be amused by them for hours. So I decided to make one of those. It was a lot harder than I thought finding the right camera angles and getting enough lighting in my kitchen that has no windows.
Using Final Cut Pro was even more frustrating because I have never used it before. Editing consisted of lots of YouTube searches for quick tutorials for what I was trying to do. I think if I tried to edit another video now it would go a lot smoother but initially learning the program was rough. Overall, I am pleased with the end result.
